The Australia Pacific Earth Charter +10 Festival is a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the launch of the Earth Charter at the Peace Palace, The Hague and highlights Brisbane’s continuing leadership role in promoting sustainable communities.

Like other internationally significant events held in Brisbane - the Asia Pacific Earth Charter Conference in 2001 and the 2006 Earth Dialogues where Mikhail Gorbachev was the special guest – the 2010 Earth Charter+10 Festival will inspire and empower the communities of Brisbane and the Asia Pacific region to work together to create a more just, sustainable and peaceful global society.

The proposed dates for the Festival will be September 16th 2010 until September 19th 2010 and the focus will be on our collective ability to respond to the major impacts of climate change, global challenges and regional conflicts in the Australia-Pacific region, using the values and principles of the Earth Charter as a way forward.  The Festival will bring people to Brisbane from across Australia and from neighbouring countries in the Pacific region to share ideas in an atmosphere of celebration and collaboration.

The proposed concept for the Festival is as follows:

1.    Day One – Inspiration  - Thursday September 16, 2010
2.    Day Two – Action – Friday September 17, 2010 ----- 3 sessions
3.    Day Three – Celebration – Saturday September 18, 2010

The day of Inspiration is planned to include a special guest – Nobel Peace Laureate and Earth Charter Commissioner, Wangari Maathai and include special messages of ‘Wisdom of the Elders’ from Australian and international indigenous leaders.  It will be held in St John’s cathedral as a community and multifaith event.

The concept of the Action segment of the Festival is to provide information and tools for three specific streams –

‘The Seeds of Change’ - an Education Stream (“Seeds of Change”) which is aimed at school students and teachers and involve school-based projects culminating in an event at St Lawrence’s School near South Bank. The event is officially approved for the Education Department 2010 Year of Environmental Sustainability for Schools event

‘Living and Breathing communities’ – a Communities Stream  which will be based at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens or inner city venue and involve a number of NGOs, Brisbane City Council, multicultural associations and multi-faith communities.

‘Harvesting the benefits’ – a Corporate and Global Governance forum to motivate and inspire business leaders and managers to greater social responsibility in the face of the global challenges confronting organisations and is organised for the Griffith University Southbank campus with the support and guidance of the Asia Pacific Centre of Sustainable Enterprise  and the UN Global Compact initiative

This multi-venue approach will allow for the delivery of detailed programs, tailored specifically for each audience, allowing business and government representatives, educators, students and individual members of the community to have access to a range of keynote speakers and workshops and showcasing world best practices of our city in living and building sustainable communities

The Day of Celebration is Planned for the Brisbane Botanical Gardens and Riverside Stage as a Sustainability and Peace Fair with the International Day of Peace Alliance combining to  celebrate and promote sustainability and peace.

Our planning committee has representatives from many community, environment and justice groups with representatives from the Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council, Griffith Universities and professional bodies to make this a success to promote and implement the Earth Charter values of justice sustainability and peace.

We look forward to your involvement and support of this festival
