Interesting websitesIntroductionIn this section you can find links to interesting websites with information relating to all kinds of environmental topics. If you would like to have a link to your website on this page, or have any suggestions for websites, please let us know. We welcome contributions of website links where information on any issue that can assist us in promoting action and/or discussion which protects and enriches our environment. With thanks to our main contributors to this section: Clare Davies, Nicole Ni and Lyn Spence. What's new:Boomerang Alliance "Affluence has created effluence - the more we have, the more we have to dispose of safely." EPA Qld. It seems that almost everything we buy comes pre-packaged. Even the smallest products seem to be packed in the largest way. There is packaging within packaging - plastic, paper, foam, paper. With today's concerns for a greener globe, we should be looking at ways for manufacturers to eliminate unnecessary waste. While there is continual focus on consumer waste there is very little attention given to manufacturing waste The Boomerang Alliance, a coalition of environment non-government organisations estimates that we can create one green job for every 650 tonnes of rubbish we recycle in Australia. Through the NRI, industry has identified a need for new plants and collection centres worth more than $3.2 billion. These centres would deliver another 2 million tonnes of recycling, create more than 7000 new jobs and help the economy grow by more than $3.3 billion a year. Without these investments, more recycling, and the jobs that go with it, will continue to be exported to countries such as China, Indonesia and India. For details on sustainable packaging, resources and contact details see the Boomerang Alliance website at http://bringitback.org.au/boomerang/ The Community Exchange System (CES) is a community-based, exchange system that provides the means for its users to exchange their goods and services, both locally and remotely. It could also be described as a global complementary trading network that operates without money as it is commonly understood . the CES is basically a new money system. Complementary currency money does not ‘exist’ like conventional money so there is no need for a supply of it and you don’t need any to start trading. Money in these systems is based on a ‘score-keeping’ system that keeps a record of who did what for whom and who sold what to whom. There can therefore never be a shortage of money and money does not have to be created by a third party (banks or government) outside the circuit of buyers and sellers. For this reason money and credit are free, for the buyers and sellers 'create' it at the moment of trade. For further information, articles and a fully functional demonstration site see the website at http://www.community-exchange.org/ http://www.actionbioscience.org/ - ‘Actionbioscience.org’ promotes bioscience literacy, and is an educational resource of the American Institute of Biosciences. It is a high-quality educational web site, and is said to be one of the five best biology web sites. This website has won several awards for being this way. ‘Actionbioscience.org’ is a non-commercial, educational web site created to promote bioscience literacy by examining issues that will: motivate the public to play an active role in bioscience education, show how developments in bioscience research can affect everyone, promote an understanding of biogeography and the biodiversity of life, engage the public to reflect on the relationship between human activity and the natural course of evolution, promote global ecological awareness, advance formal and informal bioscience education, and encourage students to pursue studies in the biosciences. To meet these goals, the site provides articles by scientists, science educators, and science students, on issues related to seven bioscience challenges: environment, biodiversity, genomics, biotechnology, evolution, new frontiers in science, and bioscience education. In addition, the web site provides educators with original lessons and resources to enhance bioscience teaching. Up-to-date external links are provided at the bottom of each article to help the reader "learn more about” or "get involved in” a particular issue. Selected articles are translated into Spanish. ActionBioscience.org’s intended audience is the concerned public, educators, students and science professionals. They welcome suggestions, as well as feedback on their posted material. "The record shows time and again that one person or a small group can awaken the public to the importance of an issue and bring about a startling change in the direction of a society.” Angligreen aims to help parishes with environmental sustainability and practical initiatives and intend to halt and, if possible, heal some of the damage that we humans have done to the earth over many years. Angligreen Encourages all organizational levels within the Diocese to commit to the seven R's of environmental care: REVERENCE for all creation :REFUSE to use resources unnecessarily :REDUCE consumption and waste : REUSE resources where appropriate :RECYCLE materials where possible :REPAIR rather than throw away :RESTORE habitat and ecosystems. Animal Diversity Web: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/index.html - Online since 1995, the Animal Diversity Web is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, and classification sponsored by scholars at the University of Michigan. Thousands of individual species accounts include extended descriptions, pictures of each species, and in some cases, recordings of sounds and short movies. The site effectively facilitates inquiry-driven learning through its innovative search tool. One very fun element is a virtual museum that includes a number of representative photographs of various animal species, and several hundred virtual reality movies. This and many other useful features of the site provide a very thorough and well thought out educational resource for students, ranging from biology to zoology. The Alternative Technology Association (ATA) is a not-for-profit organisation that has been promoting the use of renewable energy, water conservation and sustainable building since 1980. ATA has a very practical approach to achieving change through its advocacy and research work. It takes the feedback it receives from people active in sustainable living, and works to overcome the barriers that prevent or slow down the uptake of sustainable technologies. This is done through internet forums, seminars, discussions and educational events in which information and ideas are shared on various topics related to current areas of research. The organisation has undertaken numerous surveys and projects including greywater trials, viability of domestic wind turbines in urban areas and solar energy generation to create a greener and safer environment. The community research projects undertaken by Alternative Technology Association include climate change issues, technical efficiency, environmental performance, community acceptance and recycling practices. With branches and members around Australia and New Zealand, ATA provides practical information and expertise, based on our members’ hands-on experience. ATA also offers advice on conserving energy, building with natural materials, reusing, reducing the use of and recycling natural resources. Further details at http://www.ata.org.au/

Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is a national, non-profit organisation whose mission is to protect the health and vitality of Australia's coasts and seas. AMCS provides leadership on a wide range of marine issues throughout Australia including marine parks, fisheries, threatened species and land-based pollution. The marine environment is under threat and needs our help. Widespread coral bleaching, declining water quality, the presence of introduced marine pests, struggling fisheries and species declines are symptoms of a system under too much stress. Biochar is the carbon-rich solid product resulting from the heating of biomass such as wheat, chicken manure, wood or biowaste to 450 – 550oC in an oxygen-limited environment. The Network of scientists is dedicated to all facets of biochar research, including soil productivity enhancement, carbon sequestration, waste management, risk assessment and environmental management, sustainability of feedstock supply, greenhouse gas mitigation and bioenergy co-production. Further details at http://www.anzbiochar.org/ ANZSES - Established in 1961, Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES) is a non-profit organisation that can give technical service and scientific input on the renewable energy sector in Australia and New Zealand. ANZSES holds public and professional events to promote the environmentally sustainable production and use of energy and the sustainability in building. It aims to educate, inspire and enable people to utilise renewable energy sources and ecological building principles. Sustainable House Day and ANZSES annual conference on renewable energies and energy efficiency are excellent vehicles for doing just that. Understanding which climate zone you live in and how it affects your housing choices is one of the first steps in living sustainably. The ‘Inspiring Ideas’ page allows you to run the mouse over a map of Australia to find the climate zone of your own area and then follow through to a link which has suggestions and solutions for buildings in that particular climatic zone. Through a carefully targeted strategy, they aim to help communicate the facts on climate change, along with a sense of hope that solutions are available. By empowering the generation most threatened by climate change to be front and centre in solving it, they intend to make this an urgent and mainstream issue for society as a whole.
