About the Project:

The Darling Downs Solar Neighbourhoods Project is a community driven project in the Toowoomba region that commenced in October 2009. The project aims to:
  • Improve people’s understanding of solar photovoltaic grid connected systems;
  • Make it easier for people to understand financial assistance available for solar power;
  • Offer people considering a system, one at the best possible price without skimping on quality, local support or warranty, under a bulk purchase arrangement.
The project was instigated by HOPE as a result of the cessation of the generous $8,000 rebate offered by the Australian Government last year. The project relies on no external funding. Yarramine Environmental, a local environmental consultancy manages the project, and Excel Solar is the project’s supplier and installer of the systems.To date the project has had some 150 households enrol in the project and 60 odd photovoltaic’s systems installed around Toowoomba. Education seminars have been an important feature of the project. To date 14 of these 2 hour evening sessions have been held with over 300 attendees.

Of the 60 systems installed to date:

  • A combined capacity of 115kW has been installed;
  • Producing 600kW per day and saving 606kg CO2-e daily;
  • Per year, producing 219 megawatts of electricity and saving 222 tonnes CO2-e annually, a figure that is equivalent to taking 85 cars per year permanently off the road.
Below you will find information on the 3 systems aviailabel under the project, as well as an enrolment form for the project.
